Paul Schrader, the director of First Reformed, Mishima: A Life in Four Chapters, Blue Collar, Affliction, Light Sleeper, and The Comfort of Strangers, grew up in a strict Calvinist family. He attended Calvin College, and after moving to Los Angeles, became a film critic and screenwriter, writing films such as Raging Bull, Taxi Driver, The Mosquito Coast, and The Last Temptation of Christ. Schrader is the author of the book Transcendental Style in Film: Ozu, Bresson, Dreyer (University of California Press, 2018 ).
